New & Teen Drivers

In Alaska, to obtain an Instruction Permit you must: be at least 14 years of age; pass a written knowledge test; and pass a vision test. In order to obtain a Provisional driver's license, you must: be at least 16 years of age; have held a learner's permit for at least 6 months; and provide proof from a parent, legal guardian, or employer that you have completed 40 hours of driving experience, at least 10 of those hours having been driven in inclement weather or at night. In order to apply for a driver license, you must: be at least 18 years of age; pass the written knowledge test, or present either a valid instruction permit or a valid provisional license; pass a road skills test; and pass an alcohol and drug awareness knowledge test.

Motorcycles

In Alaska, to obtain a motorcycle permit, you must: be at least 14 years of age; have parental consent if you are under 18 years of age; pass a written knowledge test (or present a valid learner's permit); pass a written motorcycle knowledge test; and pass a vision test. To obtain a motorcycle license, you must: be at least 16 years of age; have held an instruction permit for at least 6 months if you are under 18 years of age; submit a parental consent form if you are under 18 years of age; pass a vision test; and either pass a written motorcycle knowledge test (or present a valid motorcycle instruction permit) and motorcycle road test, or present a certificate of completion from a Motorcycle Safety Foundation course to waive the knowledge and road tests.

Who has to take the written test?

Anyone who is getting their driver's license for the first time must pass the written test. Teens can take the test if they are at least 16 years old and have held a driving permit for at least 6 months. If they're under 18 years of age, they will also need parental consent.

Motorcyle Permit Resctictions

The applicant must be supervised at all times by a rider who is at least 21 years of age and has been licensed on the same class of motorcycle for at least one year. In addition, a motorcycle helmet meeting established safety standard must be worn at all times while operating the vehicle.

Do you need to take an on-road motorcycle driving test?

You must pass the on-road motorcycle skill test in order to receive your motorcycle license, unless you present a card issued by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation stating that you have passed one of the following Motorcycle Rider Courses within the previous or current calendar year:

  • Beginning Rider Course
  • Easy Rider Course
  • Basic Rider Course
  • Experience Rider Course

  • Anyone taking an on-road motorcycle test, regardless of their age

  • Currently, the State of Alaska does not require its citizens to obtain a license to operate boats or other watercraft.
